Japanese Stadium Design Competition Won

The shape of a cutting-edge new Japanese sports stadium has been unveiled.
UK-based Zaha Hadid Architect's design was selected by the Japan Sport Council as the winner of a competition to come up with a construction vision that worked in harmony with the local environment and connected efficiently with existing transport networks, too.
The competition also called for the winning design to be environmentally efficient, with various green construction measures employed. Set to have been constructed in Tokyo by 2019, the stadium will be an 80,000-seater and it could help the Japanese capital secure the rights to stage the 2020 Olympic Games.

In winning the Japanese stadium competition, Zaha Hadid Architects beat off a whole host of other bidding parties including Populous, which has made a name for itself as an international arena design specialist.
According to Zaha itself, the design is ‘a piece of the city's fabric - an urban connector which enhances and modulates people moving through the site from different directions and points of access'.
Covering an area of 290,000 square metres, the stadium features a retractable roof, allowing sports events to take place in all types of weather. Even though it's primarily intended as a sports venue, it could equally host other types of events and it will give Japan a stadium on a par with the Beijing National Stadium and the London Olympic Stadium designs, as used in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics respectively.
Japanese Stadium Construction Design
The new Japanese stadium construction design will replace the existing venue, erected almost 50 years ago for the 1964 Olympic Games.
"I have worked in Japan for 30 years", Zaha Hadid explained in a statement. She continued: "Our three decades of research into Japanese architecture and urbanism is evident in our winning design and we greatly look forward to building the new National Stadium. The design is both light and cohesive, seamlessly connecting the stadium's different elements to create a silhouette that integrates with the city."
