Dubai Announce World's Largest Underwater Hotel

Dubai has announced a new addition to its impressive architecture collection with the world's largest underwater hotel.

Dubbed The Water Discus, which aesthetically resembles the Starship Enterprise, the hotel is split into two sections - the top that is permanently above the sea's surface, and the underwater section, which submerges up to 33 feet.

On this scale, underwater ventures like this are unheard of, as is designed to be appealing to potential investors.

Designed by Polish company Deep Ocean Technology, the subaquatic part contains 21 hotel rooms in addition to a bar and even an underwater diving facility. The resource, complete with a 4 meter diving pool, emergency breathing stations and a wreck and cave diver training facility, helps people obtain safe diver training, with the opportunity to achieve a diving equipment certificate. Deep Ocean Technology highlighted that from this vantage point, visitors will be able to watch the behaviour of their aquatic neighbours:

"Special lighting system of the area around the room and the miniature underwater vehicles which can be operated from inside will allow you to take a closer look at even the most microscopic underwater creatures using macro photography."

However, these privileges do not come at the cost of guests' privacy. The firm assure that every room is soundproofed contain curtains of varying transparencies.

Above the waterline, features include an open terrace, luscious garden and spa. One of the upper plates also has capacity as a ship's radio system and helipad. For those travelling on business, the necessary amenities will be provided, including satellite telephones and high-speed internet access.

Swiss firm BIG InvestConsult AG collaborated with Deep Ocean Technology on the project.

As well as being used as a tourism center, BIG InvestConsult AG's president, Bogdan Gutowski, told World Architecture News that the Water Discus is also envisioned as an environmentally conscious research hub.

He said the Water Discus Hotel would be used as a laboratory for sea and ocean environment research and protection, to become part of the International Environmental Program and Center of the Underwater World Protection in the UAE.
