Cleaner Diesel Engines

Cummins is global power leader, designing, manufacturing, distributing and servicing engines and related component technologies, including fuel systems, electronic controls, turbocharging, filtration, exhaust aftertreatment and electrical power generation systems. Headquartered in Columbus, Indiana, (USA), Cummins serves customers in more than 160 countries and territories through its network of 5,700 service locations. With more than 40,000 employees worldwide, Cummins reported sales of $13.2 billion in 2010.

Engines are produced for the truck, bus, mining, construction, agriculture, material handling, marine, rail, defence and power generation applications. With close to 600,000 units produced in 2010 Cummins remains the world's largest independent diesel engine manufacturer.

Cummins strategy remains to be at the forefront of developing cleaner diesel engines to meet the increasingly stringent emissions legislation. Following major long term investment in research and development the company is positioned to meet the next level of on-road and off-road emissions limits and beyond. Using high technology in-cylinder and after treatment solutions, Cummins is focused on providing the right technology for each of the markets it sells to. The ability to do this is due to Cummins having all key technologies in-house: combustion, fuel systems, air handling, controls and aftertreatment.

This allows Cummins to continue to deliver fully integrated air intake to exhaust outlet solutions that provide the highest levels of performance, reliability, durability and fuel economy with the lowest possible running costs.

Tier 4 Diesel Engines

January 1st 2011 saw the introduction of the Tier 4 Interim/EU Stage 3B emissions legislation for engines over 173 hp (130kW). These stringent regulations affect new equipment in construction, agricultural, mining and material handling applications. Compared to the previous Stage 3A low emissions legislation, Stage 3B reduces particulate matter emissions by over 90 percent oxides of nitrogen emissions by 45 percent. This has driven the use of engine component technologies that are new to the industrial business, but they are not new to Cummins. Technologies such as the particulate filter aftertreatment, cooled exhaust gas recirculation and variable geometry turbochargers have been used successfully by Cummins since 2007. Developed by Cummins as integral systems they drive a unique level of integration and packaging efficiency with improved fuel efficiency and enhanced engine response.

A full range of Tier 4 Diesel engines, from 3.3 to 15 litres, have been developed to meet the Stage 3B power demands up to 600hp (447 kW):
